Mouse and Antonella

Antonella exited the palace and breathed in the fresh air around her. She decided it was to late in the afternoon to make a secret trip into town. Instead, she thought to wander around the castle gardens.
Antonella entered the gated garden feeling lonely and heavy hearted. She was not aloud at side the palace unless heavily guarded. This cut her off from any contact from normal creatures. The only people she could talk to where the other royals, the numerous servants that romed about the castle, and the many men that came to court her. Antonella sighed picking a flower from one of bushes.

Two brown eyes peeked over an ornamental hedge. The boy was sitting on his heels behind the bush, his face the picture of concentration. He was perfectly quiet for a few moments, earning his name: Mouse.
He’d snuck into the royal courtyard quite illegally… over the wall, into the thorny roses, past the four guards who hadn’t noticed his hiding..
And now here he was.
Taking a breath, he scrambled onto his feet and took off at a stealthy run, towards the inner courtyard. He’d heard that this was where the great Princess Antonella spent much of her time, and that was exactly who he wanted to see.
No particular reason… just for bragging rights.

Antonella breathed in the flowers scent and let her troubles slip away. She spent to much time in the castle's gardens lazing around. The flower slipped from Antonella's petite finger tips and dropped slowly to the ground. Two chocolate brown eyes were looking at her from inside the bush.
Certainly the bush was not alive. Antonella blinked a few times. "Who there?" she asked to the mysterious person.

Mouse’s eyes widened, and a great grin spread across his lips.
“Only me,” he replied boldly, beginning to stand. His head popped up over the hedge, looking directly at the Princess.
“Hello!” Mouse greeted, as if they were great friends, and he’d only popped in for a visit.

Antonella eyed the head that popped out of the bushes. "And who might you be?" she asked putting to much emphasis on the words.
The boy certainly seemed tiny and much younger than she was. Antonella did not panic at the intruder. She thought he was simply a young theif in need of nourishment.

“Mouse,” he answered readily, then quickly added, “Ma’am.”
He picked his way out of the bush and stood looking up at her, his hands clasped politely behind his back.
“And you’re Princess Antonella, aren’t you? Either that, or you look a terribly lot like her.”

Antonella smiled and nodded. "Why yes I am," she said to Mouse. "May I ask why you are standing in our lovely garden with out and invitation?" she asked cocking her lips and tilting her head slightly to the side.
Antonella was anything but mad. She felt rather amused by the child's company.

Mouse thought about this question for a silent moment, tilting his head thoughtfully.
“Well…” he answered slowly, “It /is/ a lovely garden, as you said… Um… And I came to…. To see it.”
He gave a triumphant grin and nodded his head as if to second it.

Antonella eyes the boy questioningly. "Are you sure that is why you are here?" she said doubtfully. Many people did hear of the beautiful gardens within the castle walls, and many requested to see them. Mouse, however, did not seem like one of these people. He seemed like a lost boy, a boy with no where to go.

“I’m very sure.” Mouse answered, his smile becoming a bit frozen.
“Well…. I seem to have quite a bit of time on my hands, too…” he added slowly, rocking back and forth on his heels and putting his hands into his pockets.
He looked up at the princess innocently.

Antonella smiled at Mouse's innocence and patted him on the head. She looked down at him one last time before departing. "Enjoy yourself then Mouse," she said over her shoulder as she made her way slowly back to the castle. She almost expected the boy to come running behind her.
